11:41 am on 27 June 2009

Fletcher Building will close its medium density fibreboard plant in Perth due to a fall in demand in Australia and Asia, with the loss of 114 jobs.

The building products and construction firm says its MDF maunfacturing operations will close by the end of July, as it concentrates at operations at its Gympie plant in Queensland.

The plant's other Lamanex operations will be shifted to other sites within the next three to six months.

On Friday, the company confirmed to workers it would close its Kumeu particleboard factory north-west of Auckland, with the loss of 41 jobs, according to the National Distribution Union.
