US-China trade dispute hanging in the balance

The chances of a settlement in the protracted US-China trade dispute hang in the balance after President Donald Trump publicly threatened to increase tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods at the end of the week.

A Chinese team is about to head to the US to resume talks tomorrow and there have been suggestions a deal is close to being reached.

But the Mr Trump threats upset financial markets around the world, and in the past few hours there have been new allegations the Chinese have tried to renege on previous undertakings.

Wall Street opened significantly lower, down more than 1 percent at one stage, but clawed back much of the losses to close between a quarter and half a percent lower.
