Wellington Chamber of Commerce says capital still needs airport runway extension

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce said it's disappointed but understands the reasons behind Wellington Airport's decision to withdraw its resource consent application for the runway extension.

The Council said it's better for the airport to revise the application to ensure it gets the runway safety configuration right.

However, it said the region's business community remains firmly behind the extension and the opportunities for the region's economy presented by the bigger aircraft and the new international links they would bring.

Construction industry ticking along

Government funded infrastructure projects are keeping construction activity on the boil, according to research by the British consulting firm Turner & Townsend.

Its International Construction Market survey said activity in Auckland and Christchurch is warm, compared with 64 other countries.

The cost of building in New Zealand was rated as average, sitting behind Melbourne, but before Brisbane and Perth.

However, New Zealand prices are expected to rise by 4 percent this year, which is on par with the rest of the world's construction costs.
