Rebound in business confidence

12:06 pm on 7 October 2008

New Zealand business confidence rebounded strongly in the third quarter, buoyed by falling interest rates and a lower New Zealand dollar.

Quarterly figures from the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research show one in five firms expect business conditions to deteriorate in the next six months, compared with a 33 year low of 64% in the previous quarter.

NZIER says the September survey responses were taken in time to capture some, but not all, of the turmoil on the financial markets.

Some measures of anxiety still remain, with a net number of firms still predicting higher costs and lower profitability.
