Price of oil up slightly

US oil prices rose slightly on Monday as Hurricane Ike headed for offshore rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

Most of the rigs remain closed in the wake of last week's Hurricane Gustav, with output down by 79.4%.

The Gulf is the source of a quarter of domestic crude oil and 15% of natural gas for the United States.

US crude futures settled up 11 cents at $US106.34 a barrel after dipping to a five-month low of $US104.70. London's Brent crude futures fell 65 cents to $US103.44.

Gold and copper prices fell in New York trading on Monday, reversing early gains in Asia.

The December futures contract for gold on the COMEX metals division closed down 30 cents at $US802.50 an ounce.

COMEX copper for December closed down 55 cents at $US3.0930 a lb.

On the agricultural side, soybean futures on the Chicago Board of Trade rose by more than 1%. CBOT corn prices were up; wheat prices were down.
