Retailers experienced difficult trading - analyst

An analyst says there are indications that some of New Zealand's listed retailers experienced difficult trading conditions over the holiday season.

Kathmandu's share price fell nearly 27 percent yesterday, after it signalled a first-half net loss of between $1 million and $2 million dollars, with weak sales in Australia over December and January.

Investment analyst at Milford Asset Management, Victoria Harris, said there were indications that some retail sectors in New Zealand had also been impacted by weak sales.

"We also had [the] JB HiFi result and they were saying that (the) New Zealand market has been pretty tough."

"I guess in terms of the retailers doing well....the restaurants, hardware and home exposed companies are doing a lot better than say the apparel retailers," she said.
