Plan for shared mobile phone towers

1:23 pm on 25 July 2008

The Commerce Commission hopes plans to allow mobile phone companies to share cell towers will lead to greater competition in the telecommunication industry.

Telecommunications Commissioner Ross Patterson says the move will avoid wasteful or inefficient duplication of facilities.

He says the plan will make it easier for new companies to enter the mobile phone market.

The public has a chance to have its say on the plan until 22 August and the commission will make its final decision in November.
