New Zealand house prices were steady in September, up just 0.1 percent from August, according to a new property price index produced by Trade Me.

The online trading company's index measures the asking prices for residential property listings added to Trade Me Property over the past three months by real estate agents and private sellers.

The average asking price, across all property types and regions, was $487,650 in September, a year-on-year increase of 13 percent.

Trade Me property division head Nigel Jeffries said the latest price suggests a cooling market because average asking prices peaked at $491,050 in March.
