Brewer lauds promotion using cricketer

Boutique brewer Moa Beer says sales of a new beer promoted by Australian cricketer Shane Warne are so successful it may consider a similar promotion in New Zealand.

Moa launched its 99 Not Out beer six weeks ago. The name is a play on the infamous innings of Warne when Australia played New Zealand in 2001.

The beer is only available in Australia where it's being sold through the Woolworths owned liquor chain Dan Murphy's. Shane Warne is taking a cut of the beer's sales.

Moa chief executive Geoff Ross says the beer is now the company's biggest selling product across the Tasman.

He says Shane Warne has a Twitter following of 1.3 million, so he has actively contributed to the growth of that particular product.

Mr Ross says the 99 Not Out story comes from Shane Warne never actually scoring a century, although he got to 99 against New Zealand but was caught out by Mark Richardson.

He says Moa pulled resources from the United States in order to pursue the Australian promotion, which means the company will miss its original sales targets there.

Moa's share price has more than halved from the high of $1.32 hit in February last year, and is now hovering around 62 cents.
