The 722 Toyota Corollas sold in the month accounted for 9 percent of total sales with the Ford Focus a distant second at 4 percent.

Overall, Toyota remains market leader with just over 17 percent and Ford is second with just over 11 percent.

MTA chief executive, David Crawford, says Toyota Corolla sales were higher than usual.

He says January had a rip-roaring start to 2014 because it had the highest number of sales of new vehicles for a January month since it started collecting records in the 1970s.

There were 10,528 new vehicles sold in January compared with nearly 9239 in January last year.

Sales of new commercial vehicles were up more than 17 percent while sales of passenger cars were up more than 12 percent.
