Sale of power plants launched by NSW govt

Two power stations are being offered for sale by the New South Wales government as it enters the final stage of its electricity sector reforms.

Treasurer Mike Baird on Tuesday called for expressions of interest in Delta Electricity's Vales Point and Colongra power stations. Together they have a generating capacity of 1987MW.

Vales Point power station, a coal-fired plant at the southern end of Lake Macquarie, can generate 8.3% of the state's power capacity.

Colongra, a gas-fired power station close to Lake Munmorah, is newly-built and operates as a generator to meet peak demand.

AAP reports a number of state-owned assets in NSW have already been privatised, including Sydney Water's desalination plant, Port Botany and Port Kembla, Delta Electricity's western power stations and Eraring Energy.

Mr Baird said the proceeds would go to infrastructure projects such as WestConnex, the Bridges for the Bush and upgrades to the Pacific and Princes highways, and cleared hundreds of millions in state liabilities," he said.

Expressions of interest are due by 10am (AEDT) on Tuesday, 4 February.
