Pacific satellite management contract awarded to Telecom

Telecom has been awarded a contract to establish and manage a satellite access station covering the Pacific Ocean region for Inmarsat, a global mobile satellite technology company.

Telecom will provide ground services at its Warkworth satellite earth station north of Auckland, which will receive and pass on data through its backhaul system.

The satellite access station is part of Inmarsat's global network, which is aimed at providing mobile users in remote loacations, like shipping companies, with broadband services.

Telecom won't go into detail of the dollar value of the deal because of commercial sensitivity, but says it's a vote of confidence in the New Zealand telecommunications network.
