A drop in the number of people moving to Australia has resulted in a net gain in migration.
Official figures show a seasonally adjusted net gain of 340 people in January compared with the previous month.
On an annual basis, New Zealand gained 12 permanent and long term migrants, compared with a loss of 3134 in the previous January year.
The number of people moving across the Tasman fell to 37,900 for the year, which economists say is due to Australia's slowing economy.
Separately, tourist numbers fell 2% in January, which Statistics New Zealand says is due to fewer holiday makers from China and Hong Kong, which in turn it put down to the impact of the Chinese New Year holidays.
For the year, the number of short-term visitors fell 2% to 2.56 million.
