An income gap between the lowest-earning households and those at the top has closed in the past year.
According to Statistics New Zealand's Household Economic Survey, the bottom fifth of households earned less than $33,345 in 2011.
This year's survey shows the number of households earning that amount fell almost 8%.
At the same time, the number in the top quarter of household income of above $104,000 rose by 7%.
