Disney is buying Lucasfilm, the company that made the Star Wars films.

It is paying $US4.05 billion to chairman and founder George Lucas.

"It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of film makers," said Mr Lucas.

In a statement announcing the purchase, Disney said it planned to release Episode 7 in 2015. That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 and then a new movie every two or three years.

The last film in the series was Revenge of the Sith in 2005.
