Campaign aimed at cutting prostate cancer deaths

The Government is to spend $1 million a year on a campaign aimed at reducing the death rate of men from prostate cancer.

The Budget provides $4.3 million over four years to raise awareness of prostate cancer and ensure men have better access to quality information and care.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says about 3000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and more than 600 die from it.

He says he's been told an awareness campaign will lead to better survival rates.

He also says advice on prostate cancer tests and management can be confusing, and a great deal of conflicting information makes it hard for men and their families to make informed decisions.

The funds will be used to develop information resources; to create support materials for family doctors to advise men about tests and treatment; and to develop clinical standards in order to ensure all men have fair and equal access to quality cancer care.
