Police Commissioner Richard Chambers says the officer injured after incountering Tom Phillips on Monday morning is "very, very lucky to still be with us".
Speaking to Checkpoint, he said: "The injuries are significant, he's got a long road to recovery."
Phillips was shot dead on Monday morning after burgling a Piopio farm supplies shop and shooting an officer, who remains critically injured.
At a press conference in Hamilton earlier on Tuesday, Chambers and Minister of Police Mark Mitchell revealed the first images of the campsite where Tom Phillips' children were found.
Mitchell said there was a big human cost to the incident but a huge relief that the children are safe in Oranga Tamariki care after nearly four years on the run with their father.
