Whangārei Airport has re-opened after a light plane crash on Monday morning left a pilot with minor injuries.

The Alpi Pioneer 200 aircraft crashed as it was landing at about 10:15am.

A St John spokesperson said the pilot was assessed and treated at the scene, and did not have to be taken to hospital.

Airport manager Steve Jennings said the pilot was badly shaken.

Initial reports were that the nose wheel had collapsed but Jennings said the cause of the crash was yet to be determined.

The light plane stopped on the grass off the runway.

Police, Whangārei and Onerahi fire brigades, and St John Ambulance responded.

Meanwhile, an Air New Zealand spokesperson said the 11.05am flight from Auckland to Whangārei was delayed as a result of the crash, but was expected to take off shortly after 12pm.

All other flights in and out of Whangārei on Monday were expected to operate normally, she said.

The Civil Aviation Authority has been notified.
