Fire and Emergency says crews remain at the hospital going through salvage operations.

Police are assisting with traffic control.

Health New Zealand group director of Canterbury operations Waitaha Hamish Brown said patients and staff were all safe, with some patients moved to areas away from the strongest odour.

"A number of patient appointments and treatments have been postponed, due to the incident, and are being rescheduled as soon as possible," he said.

"While we work to clean up the water damage, we encourage those with non-urgent concerns to consider other options for access to acute care, including the free Healthline (0800 611 116) to speak to a registered nurse, or local GPs, healthcare providers and community pharmacies.

"However, anyone who needs urgent or emergency care should come to ED without delay or call 111."

Brown said the fire was in a power supply room on the second level of the Waipapa building.

"The sprinklers and fire alarm were triggered, and Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) responded in line with our usual fire safety processes," he said.
