Wellington's Mount Victoria Tunnel on State Highway 1 is closed in both directions due to a crash.
Emergency services were at the scene, NZTA said.
Southbound traffic could detour via Patterson St, Adelaide Rd, Riddiford St, Constable St and Wellington Rd - and the reverse for northbound, it said.
People should allow additional time for their journey and take extra care.
