NZ Post says it has resumed most US parcel sending services.

It stopped its parcel service to the US in August after tariffs were announced.

At the time, NZ Post said it expected the suspension would be short-term but could not give customers an exact date.

New Zealand was hit with a 15 percent base rate tariff at the start of the month, up from the original 10 percent announced earlier.

On Friday, NZ Post said "most" of its parcel services had resumed at "selected stores, using digital customs forms".

"We know how important it is for our customers to stay connected with friends, family and customers in the US," general manager of export and international solutions Jared Handcock said.

"We've worked quickly to make the necessary changes to meet new customs requirements and get services moving again."

Paper customs forms would only be accepted for letters and documents with no commercial value, NZ Post said.

Gifts under NZ$150 could be sent via Economy, Courier or Express without being subject to taxes and duties. Items over this value, or items which are not gifts, would need to be sent using the Express service, "and any duties and taxes will apply and be charged to the receiver".

"Customers will be asked to provide more detailed item descriptions and contact information for the sender and receiver when completing the digital customs form, to meet US customs requirements."

Businesses could now send parcels using Economy, Economy Tracked, Economy Plus, Courier and Express services.

"These are now available with 'Delivered Duty Paid' for on-account NZ Post business customers, allowing the sender to cover duties and taxes. This is in addition to our new Courier Select_US for business senders, as announced last week."

More detailed information would be needed from now, with electronic labelling, NZ Post said.

"It's important that all senders refer to the new requirements for sending items to the United States," which were listed online.

"We're continuing work to update our other online tools which will enable all business customers to resume sending, and personal senders to send all items, not just gifts," Handcock said.

"We know how important this is for our customers, and we are very happy to see the majority of US sending back up and running."

New Zealand was just one of a few dozen countries that paused shipments to the US after tariffs were slapped on.
