A signal fault has led to trains between Wellington and the Hutt Valley being canned during rush hour on Tuesday evening.

The Metlink website said services started being affected by mechanical issues at around 4.20pm.

A KiwiRail spokesperson told RNZ signalling issues were affecting multiple stations on the Hutt Valley Line which was causing disruption to peak services.

"We know that outages are frustrating, especially as people are trying to get home.

"Our team is working to understand what is causing the issue and resolve it as quickly as possible."

The spokesperson said it was working with train operator Transdev to arrange bus replacements.
