A man has died after a street fight in the Auckland suburb of Ōtara on Friday night.
A homicide investigation has been launched.
"Police were called to Wymondley Road shortly before midnight after reports of a group of people fighting in the street," Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Taylor said.
"Upon arrival, two men were located with critical injuries."
The men were taken to hospital and one died a short time later. The other man remains in hospital in a serious condition.
Manukau councillor Alf Filipaina told RNZ the homicide investigation had shocked local leaders.
"They are saying condolences to the families involved," he said. "It really is just something that, for them, is not 'us'.
"They're just saying 'it's not Ōtara'. You've now got one person who has passed and then you've got another seriously injured, so they are shocked.
"We haven't had anything this serious for a while."
A scene examination continued on Saturday, with cordons in place and police urging witnesses to come forward.
