It's been a rough few weeks for residents in Southern California. First a massive fire swept through the region, destroying homes and leaving the earth scorched and dry.

Then this week, rivers of mud flowed through, crushing homes and killing at least 17 people.

Santa Barbara county in particular has been left devastated and attention is turning to the clean up effort.

California correspondent Rachel Silverman says there are still a number of people missing, but hope of finding them alive is dwindling.
