E rere e te huata hopokia, e rere e te huata tomokia
When the huata spear flies grasp it, When the huata spear flies enter it
This week's whakatauki is explained by Toni Huata nō Ngāti Kahungunu ki te Wairoa, Rongowhakaata
Hekenukumai Nga Iwi Busby nō Te Rarawa, Ngāti Kahu is a national treasure and it’s thanks to his tenacity, curiosity and hard work that our knowledge of ocean navigation is as comprehensive as it is. By utilising the knowledge of the original navigators and his peer Mau Piailug (1932 - 2010), Busby helped revitilise the science and artistry involved in building waka to sail upon the ocean using traditional navigational techniques. Maraea Rakuraku spends time with the 82-year-old who prior to becoming this countrys pre–eminent Master Navigator and Waka builder worked in a bakery and built bridges.
