Conservationist Geoff Harrow

Geoff Harrow began catching the train from Christchurch and making solo expeditions into the mountains while just a boy.

His tenacious and solitary approach lead him into areas never previously visited, and along the way, he discovered a feisty seabird breeding remarkably high in the mountains above Kaikoura.

His ongoing passion for the Hutton Shearwater has lead to a DOC recovery programme to set up a 3rd colony of the species in a less precipitous environment.

Deborah Nation joins Geoff on a DOC and Forest and Bird expedition to check on the nocturnal spring arrival of the seabirds, and to introduce them to a new landowner, who by conservation covenant, must provide their ongoing protection from deer, stoat and wild pig.
