Andris Apse is arguably New Zealand's most acclaimed landscape photographer.

"I have to be self controlled and think "no, there's a thousand photographers have got that in the last year", also it's not showing the moods I like to show, to differentiate my work .... so sometimes I'll wait years for that opportunity. Other times I'll get it quite quickly, but not often."

He draws from his work of the past thirty years, much previously unpublished, for the new book, Spirit of the South (Penguin, ISBN: 9780143571865), a photographic tribute to the mainland, with essays by Alison Ballance, Anton Oliver, Fiona Farrell and Kennedy Warne.
