John Carson Lennox is a British mathematician and philosopher of science who is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford, and Fellow in Mathematics and Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College, Oxford University. He is the author of a number of books, including and God’s Undertaker: Has Science Buried God? (Lion Books, ISBN: 978-0-82547-912-0) and Gunning for God: Why the New Atheists are Missing the Target (Lion Books, ISBN: 978-0745953229).

9:05 Mary Ruefle

Mary Ruefle teaches the MFA in Writing program at Vermont College of Fine Arts and is a visiting professor at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. She has published ten books of poetry, most recently Selected Poems (2010, Wave Books, ISBN: 978-1-933-51756-8), a book of prose and a comic book. Her 2012 collection of lectures on poetry and life, Madness, Rack, and Honey (Wave Books, ISBN: 978-1-933-51757-5), was shortlisted for this year's National Book Critics' Circle Awards. Mary visited Wellington to hold a masterclass for MA in Creative Writing students at the International Institute of Modern Letters.

9:45 Ollie Hughes, Jared Lee and Lily Mason Mackay

Oliver Hughes and Jared Lee are students at Onslow College in Wellington, and Lily Mason Mackay is a student at Wellington High School. They were part of a team of five New Zealand students at the week-long International Young Physicists’ Tournament in Taipei, where they competed against teams from 26 countries, presenting and debating their own research in a series of physics problems and challenges. The team finished sixth, and Jared Lee won the premier trophy for Best Review of a challenge.

New Zealand singer and songwriter Rick Bryant has been performing and recording since the 1960s, with bands that include BLERTA, Mammal, the Windy City Strugglers, Rough Justice, The Neighbours, Rick Bryant and the Jive Bombers, the Jubilation Gospel Choir, and most recently the Black Soap Boys, who performed in April in Paekakariki and Petone.

11:05 Roald Hoffmann

Roald Hoffmann is a theoretical chemist and playwright who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1981, and is the Frank H. T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters, Emeritus, at Cornell University in New York. He visited Auckland to deliver the illustrated lecture, A Science All About Change, presenting several views of chemistry and stressing its psychological dimension and ties to the arts (Auckland Museum Events Centre, 6pm, 13 February), and was a keynote speaker at AMN6, the MacDiarmid Institute’s Sixth International Conference on Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (University of Auckland Business School, 11-15 February).
