Award-winning Scottish travel writer, historian and journalist William Dalrymple lives in India where he is one of the founders of the Jaipur Literary Festival. His latest book, Return of a King: the Battle for Afghanistan (Bloomsbury, ISBN: 978-1-4088-2287-6), is an analysis of the First Anglo-Afghan War of 1839. He will be a guest at three sessions (15, 17, 18 May) of the 2013 Auckland Writers & Readers Festival.

Kingi Smiler chairs the management committee for the 2013 Ahuwhenua Trophy BNZ Māori Excellence in Farming Award, the premier award for Māori in agriculture, which marks its 80th anniversary this year. He is also chairs the Wairarapa Moana Incorporation, Tairawhiti Land Development Trust, and milk powder manufacturer Miraka, and is a director of Wellington Rugby Union.

Dr Richard P. Allen is an associate professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is the co-founder of the Johns Hopkins Center for Restless Legs Syndrome, which has a clinical and a research role, and is the leader of a new study into RLS.

Dr Helena Popovic is one of Australia’s foremost authorities on how to improve brain function. Her book, In Search of My Father (Choose Health, ISBN: 978-1-74284-004-8), tells about caring for her father during his dementia, and taking charge of brain health. She will be a guest at one session (19 May) of the 2013 Auckland Writers & Readers Festival.
11:40 Andrew Digby
Andrew Digby has a PhD in astronomy and completed a post-doctoral fellowship with NASA, but became captivated with conservation when he came to New Zealand in 2006. His current biology PhD uses kiwi calls as the basis for revealing more about kiwi behaviour and to help provide new tools for their conservation.
