Guest details for Saturday Morning 20 October 2012

8:15 Pete Townshend

Pete Townshend is the guitarist, principal songwriter and creative force behind rock band The Who, and has been one of popular music’s most influential figures. In his autobiography, Who I Am (Harper Collins, ISBN: 978-0007466030), he tells his own story for the first time - a chronicle of a difficult childhood, ambition, controversy, relentless perfectionism, rock ‘n’ roll excess, and emotional and spiritual turmoil.

8:45 Ray Waru

Ray Waru has been involved in the New Zealand television and radio industries for over 30 years. His first book is Secrets & Treasures: Our Stories Told Through the Objects at Archives New Zealand (Random House, ISBN: 978-1-86979-689-1).

9:05 Bruce Levin

Bruce Levin is a member of the National Academy of Science in the United States, has a wide range of expertise in evolutionary biology and microbiology, and is best known for his work on antibiotic resistance and population biology of bacteria. He is visiting New Zealand as a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for the Infectious Disease Research Centre (IDReC) at Massey University.

9:45 Art with Mary Kisler

Mary Kisler is the Senior Curator, Mackelvie Collection, International Art, at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. She will discuss leading painters of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries whose works are featured in the exhibition, Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado, at the Queensland Art Gallery (until 4 November 2012).   It is the largest and most significant international loan the TheMuseoNacional del Prado, Madrid, has ever undertaken, and features over 100 masterpieces from one of the most revered collections of European painting in the world. They tell the story of the evolution of painting in Spain over three and a half centuries. Images under discussion can be seen by clicking on the Art on Saturday Morning link on the right hand side of the Saturday Morning web page.

10:05 Playing Favourites with Jon Toogood

Jon Toogood’s latest musical endeavour is worlds away from his more than 20 years as the frontman of much-loved rock group Shihad. He’s taking to the stage at Auckland’s Silo Theatre, along with Julia Deans, Tama Waipara, and Jennifer Ward-Lealand, to perform the music of the great Jacques Brel.  And his side project, The Adults, is about to release its live collaboration album with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

11:05 Geoff Norman

Geoff Norman is the editor of Buller's Birds of New Zealand: the Complete Work of JG Keulemans (Te Papa Press, ISBN: 978-1-877385-88-9), an all-new edition of the classic 19th century ornithological paintings of John Gerrad Keulemans.

11:40 Mark Staufer

Expat New Zealander, and now Hollywood screenwriter, Mark Staufer has created The Numinous Place, which he calls the world’s first multi-dimensional work of fiction. The project has been funded on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter and the first installment is due to launch in December.
