8:15 Fredrik Gertten

Swedish film maker and journalist. Fredrik Gertten has worked for newspapers, radio and television in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe before founding WG Film in 1994. His 2009 documentary Bananas, about a conflict between the Dole Food Company and banana plantation workers in Nicaragua, led to Gertten being sued for defamation by Dole, a story he tells in his new film, Big Boys Gone Bananas. He has also just completed a short film, The Invisible Bicycle Helmet.

 

9:05 Baroness Ilora Finlay of Llandaff

Professor Ilora Finlay, Baroness Finlay of Llandaff, is a Welsh doctor, professor of palliative medicine at Cardiff University School of Medicine, and a consultant at the Velindre cancer centre in Cardiff. She was made a life peer in 2001, and in 2003 proposed a bill to ban smoking in public buildings in Wales, which became law three years later. She was President of the Royal Society of Medicine from 2006 to 2008, and is visiting New Zealand at the invitation of Hospice NZ, to participate in a Conference for Health Professionals (17 August) that focuses on the challenges of end of life care, and to take part in a public meeting on euthanasia (16 August).

 

9:45 Art with Mary Kisler

Mary Kisler is the Senior Curator, Mackelvie Collection, International Art, at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, and is also working, in partnership with Te Papa, to lead the Museum's art team for six months, with the aim of exhibiting more of the nation's art more often. Her touring exhibition, Angels and Aristocrats: Early European Art in NZ Collections, based on her book, opens at Te Papa on 20 October. 10:05 Playing Favourites with Catherine Downes

Catherine Downes MNZM has been working in theatre, film and television for four decades in New Zealand and Australia as an actress, director and playwright, and is a former artistic director of Court Theatre in Christchurch, and director of Downstage in Wellington. Internationally acclaimed for her one-woman show The Case of Katherine Mansfield, Downes has performed in Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland in three different productions of A Shortcut to Happiness by Roger Hall, and has just completed the Auckland Theatre Company tour of their production to Hamilton, New Plymouth, Hawkes Bay and Tauranga. She is currently appearing in the solo production of The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion at Circa Theatre (to 8 September).

 

11:05 Ry Cooder

American guitarist, singer and composer Ry Cooder has collaborated with many musicians since the 1960s, including the Rolling Stones, Ali Farka Toure, Van Morrison and Neil Young. He has four Grammy awards, two honorary doctorates, produced the worldwide hit recording for the Buena Vista Social Club, and has released 16 solo albums, including Election Special (Nonesuch/Perro Verde), which is released this month.

 

11:45 Mike Hudson

Mike Hudson is an Auckland playwright. A revised version of his 2003 play Beautiful Losers, based on the relationship between Beat icons Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady and their journeys through America in the 1940s and 1950s, is playing at Tapac Theatre in Auckland (23 August to 8 September), after performances at the Erupt Festival in Taupo.
