8:12 Rob Hamill: Brother No. 1

Marathon rowing champion Rob Hamill has won World Championship silver, Commonwealth gold and a world record on the indoor rowing machine. His book, The Naked Rower, tells how he and the late Phil Stubbs won the grueling and inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race in 41 days. He features in Brother Number One, a documentary by Annie Goldson about the torture and murder of Rob’s eldest brother Kerry by the Khmer Rouge in 1978, and Rob’s journey to Cambodia to find out what happened.

9:05 John Kendrick: birds

John Kendrick has been bird watching for 85 years. He was awarded the Forest & Bird Old Blue award in 2010 for services to conservation, especially his contribution to sound recording, and is still active in conservation in his local area of Waipu. With Geoff Moon, Lynnette Moon and Karen Baird, he is the author of New Zealand Bird Calls (New Holland, ISBN: 978-1-86966-310-0), which includes a CD of bird calls.

Mary-Annette Hay became known as the Queen of Wool while working as Promotions Officer for the New Zealand Wool Board between 1948 and 1965. A collection of her garments were displayed at Te Papa, and she is a supporter of the Campaign for Wool, a five-year global initiative that aims to bring wool back into fashion and to highlight its eco-friendly and durable benefits.
