8:15 Alan Walker
Dr Alan Walker is Professor of Social Policy and Social Gerontology at the University of Sheffield, and director of the New Dynamics of Ageing Programme, the UK's largest ever research programme on ageing, He is also Director of the European Research Area in Ageing, an advisor to the UN on the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing and World Health Organisation on active ageing, and the 2009 Visiting Fellow to the Institute of Policy Studies at Victoria University of Wellington.

Dr John Leslie is a lecturer in Political Science at Victoria University of Wellington, and the VUW Representative on the Executive Board of the New Zealand European Union Centres Network. He was working as a television news producer for NBC in East Germany on the night of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and will speak at a major international conference commemorating that event, Europe 1989-2009: Reunited and Revitalised, at Victoria University (3-4 November).

Singer/songwriter Jan Hellriegel played with Cassandra's Ears and Working With Walt, released two solo albums in the 1990s, and worked as a guest vocalist for bands such as Straitjacket Fits, the Verlaines, and the Muttonbirds. She is launching her new album, All Grown Up, as a general CD release and as a special collector's edition package which will include 1200 signed and numbered CDs, a 12-inch vinyl version of the album, a 28-page pictorial booklet, and two premier tickets to the opening night launch concert, A Musical Blind Date with Jan Hellriegel, at Auckland's Civic Wintergarden on 22 October.

Australian print and broadcast journalist Paul Barry has written unauthorised biographies of Kerry Packer and Alan Bond. In his new book, Who Wants to Be a Billionaire? The James Packer Story (Allen & Unwin, ISBN: 978-1-74175-974-7), he tells the story of how Australia's richest man nearly lost the fortune bequeathed to him by his father.
11:45 Te Taka Keegan
Te Taka Keegan is a Māori language activist and senior lecturer in computer science at the University of Waikato. He has been instrumental in many technological advances for the Māori language including the Microsoft keyboard template, the on-line Māori Niupepa Collection, Microsoft Windows and Office in Māori, and the Google web search interface in Māori. He was a visiting scientist with Google in 2008/2009, and assisted in the development of the Google Translator Toolkit.
