Motoko Kakubayashi was raised in Palmerston North, but now resides in Tokyo and works for the Science Media Centre of Japan. It's Obon Festival season - the time of year when families go back to their hometowns and honour the spirits of their ancestors. Also fireworks, elections and preparing for earthquakes.
