David Tamihere's last chance to prove he's innocent

From Nights, 9:25 pm on 18 August 2025

Thirty-six years ago, Swedish tourists Urban Höglin and Heidi Paakkonen went missing. Just over a year later, David Tamihere was found guilty of their murders.

Tamihere and his supporters have always maintained his innocence, with Tamihere claiming he was framed by the police.

Since then, there have been numerous appeals, jailhouse confessions and even involvement from one of New Zealand's wealthiest men but still, no court has ever overturned Tamihere's conviction.

It's a case that has captivated the public for more than three decades, and one that Stuff journalist Mike White has followed closely.

He speaks to Emile Donovan about why the case is still being examined three decades later.

Convicted double murder David Tamihere is appealing his convictions at the Court of Appeal next week.
