Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani struck up a friendship in 1998 after discovering that they both loved techno icons Kraftwerk, soulful disco producer James "D-Train" Williams, and Detroit techno pioneer Derrick May.
Both had been making music since the late 80s, Darshan the lesser known, recording under several aliases including; Acronym City, City of God, and Essa 3. They released one track together as Phenom on West Coast label Aquarhythms and then decided on Metro Area.
