08:10 Scanning your groceries - and you!

If you shopped at a New World or Pak'nSave in the North Island last year, there's a chance your face was scanned by facial recognition technology. Between February and September, Foodstuffs North Island ran a trial using the technology in some of its supermarkets.

And earlier this month the Privacy Commissioner released a report on the trial finding there were both potential safety benefits and significant privacy concerns. Although the Commissioner said the report wasn't a green light for wider use, dozens of the country's biggest retailers are already backing facial recognition in their stores.

Privacy Commissioner Michael Webster joins Emile Donovan to discuss the possible pitfalls if it isn't implemented properly.
