At least a third of food grown around the world fails to be eaten, with the resulting food waste causing 10 percent of global carbon emissions.

However, there are pioneers trying to tackle different issues along the chain, People Fixing the World visits a project linking farmers direct to customers in Puerto Rico, checks out smart labels that extend the shelf life of food by revealing when food actually goes off, and revisit an app where millions of people share spare food for free.

9:07 Our Changing World

On Our Changing World this week, they're sending off SOFIA - the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy.  

SOFIA is a telescope with a difference: it's installed onboard a Boeing 747 jet plane with a hole cut in its side. Many of its missions began in Christchurch, taking off for long flights in clear southern skies to observe comets, stars, and planetary atmospheres. But last month, SOFIA took off from Christchurch for the last time, bound for retirement in California.
