Kawhia may be a town of fewer than 500 people, 350 in fact, but it has a vibrant cafe and a huge new hotel is being built in the middle of town. The pohutukawa the Tainui canoe first tied up to 900 years is still on the edge of the harbour. And locals say the town is certainly not dying.
