7:12 Our First Foreign War

We're joined by author Nigel Robsonn who, his new book, Our First Foreign War, looks at the social impacts of the often overlooked South African war, particularly on NZ's blossoming national identity. He even makes the assertion that it was here, rather than the battlefields of World War I that the Anzac spirit had its genesis.

9:07 Black Sheep

We kick off a four part documentary on Sir George Grey from RNZ's Black Sheep podcast.

George Grey served twice as Governor of Aotearoa in the mid-19th Century. He's most famous for launching the Waikato War, by far the largest conflict of the New Zealand Wars.  In this first episode, our host William Ray looks at Grey's early life and career. How he rose through the ranks of the British Army to become Governor of South Australia when he was still in his 20s - the youngest Governor in the entire British Empire.
