The Ethiopiques with Mahmoud Ahmed (Ethiopia/France)

French music producer Francis Falceto has championed popular Ethiopian music of the early 1960's to the mid 1970's, when extreme political changes caused its demise. From this golden age of Ethiopian music- singer Mahmoud Ahmed performs with Falceto's 10-piece band - The Ethiopiques.

Born in Addis Ababa in 1941, Mahmoud first sang professionally in the early 1960s and continued to perform through the fifteen years of military controlled "Derg Time" when musical nightlife was prohibited. He is a versatile singer who spans traditional Gouragué styles, melancholy blues, brassy urban jazz, Afrobeat and Latino-swing. (RNZ)
