8:06 The Secret Life of Saxophonists

After it's resurgent pop-rock hey days during the 1980s, the saxophone was in danger of becoming unbearably unfashionable and dying out. But the sax lives on.

Who are the kiwi saxophonists who keep the fire burning? Nick Atkinson, a saxophonist himself, sifts through the sediment of endless jazz-funk jams to discover a living breathing horn culture kept alive by a diverse tribe of local players. From Lewis McCallum on his synth sax to tenor man Chris Neilson blowing his rootsy horn for House Of Shem, the globe-trotting Nathan Haines and Godfrey de Grut, currently gigging with Opensouls, a cross-section of kiwi saxophonists reveals a thoughtful group of talented musicians.
