Lyttelton-bred Harding released her third album Designer in April, with Q Magazine giving it five stars and saying it was “both fascinating and frightening, highly eccentric and blisteringly beautiful”. The Guardian agreed, calling it a “captivating and indecipherable” work.

Harding has been nominated for four NZ Music Awards this year including Best Solo Artist, Best Alternative Artist, Song of the Year and Album of the Year.

American psychedelic-folk artist Weyes Blood (Natalie Mering) released her critically-acclaimed debut, Titanic Rising earlier this year. It appeared in Pitchfork’s Best New Music, with NPR praising Mering’s songwriting as “steeped in the magic stuff of fantasies and daydreams”.

Sister duo Purple Pilgrims (Clementine and Valentine Nixon) released their second album Perfumed Earth in August with Pitchfork saying many of the songs “elicit an almost mystic appeal”, and that the album’s real triumph is “its lush melodies, strands that wind and splay like a carpet”.
