Music 101 The Summer Edition 27 December, 2008

Music 101 starts at the earlier time of Midday during the summer and includes interviews and features, live performances, festival and tour reports, and fresh, summer sounds. This week:

12:30 pm In the Moog

In a world gone digital, there's a new breed of musicians embracing the warmth of analogue sounds. One of the most sought after studio set-pieces is anything bearing the label 'Moog'. In 1971, American engineer Robert 'Bob' Moog created one of the first commercially available synthesizers - the Minimoog - which introduced a whole world of musicians to the infinite possibilities of synthesized sound. For 'In the Moog', Nick Dwyer spoke to Mr Moog in Cape Town South Africa, two years before his death, and meets a selection of Kiwi Moog proponents.

1:10 pm Music Review 2008

Music journalists Grant Smithies and Duncan Grieve join Music 101 host Kirsten Johnstone to chart the highs, lows, surprise hits and duds from the music released during 2008.

3:05 pm Beirut Live at WOMAD 2008

Beirut.

Beirut is the brainchild of Santa Fe, New Mexico's Zach Condon (pictured right), a young musician with an astonishing career so far. At age 16 while travelling in Europe, Condon was exposed to Balkan gypsy music (a form of Eastern European Folk music). He was most notably inspired by the Boban Markovic Orchestra, a brass ensemble lead by the famous Serbian trumpet player. In 2006, at the worldly age of 20, he released two Balkan-inspired recordings as Beirut and went on to record three more in 2007. A shining star of the music blogging community, a forum where marketing holds no sway and all music is judged on merit, Zach Condon's Beirut boasts fans from many music circles and walks of life, appealing as much to the World music lover as the hip Indie crowd. He successfully blends styles that are both new and old, creating something that is modern and wholly his own. Live he is accompanied by a 10-piece band and it takes a full string and brass section to tether down his wonderful sighing, somersaulting vocals.
