July saw global temperature records broken as heatwaves swept across Europe, North Africa, North America and Asia.

July 6 was the hottest day ever, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service with the global average temperature reaching 17.08°C .

The effects of the heat waves were felt in Aotearoa, where NIWA data shows temperatures were above average for most of the country.

That includes a peak temperature of 21.1°C degrees in Wairoa.

NIWA's principal scientist, Chris Brandolino, told Corin Dann we just experienced the fourth warmest July on record.
