Cyclone Gabrielle: Expert on what storm's low pressure means

Storm surges are slamming coastal parts of Northland, causing flooding on several roads as Cyclone Gabrielle rolls in.

A storm surge makes the expected tide rise higher than normal, caused by the low pressure of a storm sucking the water upwards.

NIWA meteorologist Chris Brandolino has been monitoring developments. He spoke to Corin Dann.
