Cyclone Gabrielle could reach Northland on Sunday before moving south towards Auckland.
The category one cyclone is currently in the Coral Sea and is likely to become a category three over the next 24 hours.
If it reaches us it will be an intense weather system, with heavy rain, gale force winds and significant sea swells.
Niwa meteorologist Chris Brandolino spoke to Morning Report.
