Dunedin flood risk easing after rainy night

Rain has eased in Dunedin with those evacuated from their homes in North Dunedin able to return to their homes.

But many roads in Otago remain closed and care is advised. Waitaki Council road manager Mike Harrison says it's a similar story there where things are soggy.

Canterbury has also been smashed by repeat wild weather - Metservice's John Law says over July they've had 267milimetres compared to the normal average of 61 milimetres for the month.

But the wet weather is not over yet with much of the country forcast more rain today.

Orange Heavy Rain warnings remain in place for North Otago and Dunedin And roads all round the motu are feeling the impact too - Waka Kotahi's Mark Owen says access to dozens of roads across Canterbury and Otago remain heavily restricted or closed.

He says they will all need assessing before they can be deemed safe to drive on.
