COP26 ends with pact to 'phase down' coal use

Two weeks of intense negotiations at the United Nations climate conference in Glasgow has ended with a new pact aimed at curbing global warming.

The agreement is the first ever climate deal to explicitly plan to reduce the use of coal, but a last minute intervention by India led to the term 'phase out' being replaced by the weaker 'phase down'.

UK prime minister Boris Johnson had previously described the conference as the beginning of the end for climate change but he sounded less certain in reacting to this deal.
