The clean up will begin today on the east coast as well where heavy rain caused havoc yesterday.
At Tokomaru Bay the school has been almost completely destroyed and families were evacuated in some areas where houses were flooded.
Numerous roads were washed away including a bridge in Waipiro Bay.
RNZ's Māni Dunlop was on the most-affected street in Tokomaru Bay.
